A not-so-Happy Republic Day To You!

Today's an important day. The Republic Day Of India - the day when our India was declared a Socialist, Secular and Democratic Republic. Once again we're reminded of the leaders who framed our constitution, martyrs who laid their lives for this country and all those known and unknown people because of whom we breathe in a free nation.

But, was it worth it?

They dreamed of an India in which people will live united as INDIANS- not in which a person's caste will come before his character.

They thought they're gifting the future generation our nation for them to beautify and enrich it - not for them to exploit it for selfish gains.

They hoped that India will grow to be the most beautiful, hospitable and, yes, most developed country in the world - not that India will be named a third world country.

I'm not writing this to list all the social and economic problems of India. Nearly every mature Indian knows them by heart. And I am certainly not suggesting that nobody hasn't done anything yet. But, the thing is, have we done enough?

The answer is NO. We haven't done enough. What India lacks today is PATRIOTISM. I know many people would disagree with me. Nearly every Indian loves his country. Aren't they patriotic..!!!

Again, the answer is no. Patriotism isn't just about standing stiff during the national anthem or singing patriotic songs. Nor is it about watching a handful of "DESHBHAKTI" flicks and sobbing at the climax. Now Honestly tell me, how many of you have kept politics as a career option. I'm not sure if many of you can say yes. That's the problem with today's youth, including me. We know all about India's prevailing problems but instead of trying to solve it, we're running away from it. Tell me, if a part of your body's diseased - will you try to cure it or just ignore it? So why isn't our attitude same when it comes to our country!!! OK, agreed that everyone can't go into politics. But there's a lot one can do no matter in which position he is. Because all of us share one common position - that of an Indian. Serving your country doesn't only mean joining the army and sacrificing your life for this country. Be honest in your work. Place your country's welfare before yours. Condemn corruption. Eradicate illiteracy. There are endless things you can do. This country has to be freed from the clutches of power hungry men. This country has got to change. Take the responsibility to change it...

Neither the problem is simple, nor is the solution! Just doing your work properly needs an environment which makes you work the way you want. But we are still living in a system similar to British Raj. Just the clerks are replaced now by sofware engg and HR Managers. Are they really interested in that work? Most of them are not. Where does the basic problem lies? Instead of me answering that, its better you read Arundhati Roy books like
The Algebra of Infinite Justice (Arundhati Roy)
An Ordinary persons Guide to the Empire (AR)

take care
