Intelligence? or Education?

How do you define Intelligence? Does Intelligence mean coming first in your class? Does Intelligence mean cracking IIT or PMT in the first attempt? Or does it mean spending 20 hrs glued to your textbook? Does being intelligent means being literate or educated?

Why do people judge a person's Intelligence by the subject he takes up or the marks he/she gets in the stupid school examinations? Its a general fallacy, that a person who takes up Math is Super-Intelligent and the person who takes up Arts is a good-for-nothing moron!! A normal student today is under so much pressure! Parents, peers, teachers - He's so many people to answer to!

There are SO MANY times when we're prejudiced by the marks we get or we fail in some apparently stupid tests!! "Intelligence just means taking the right decisions at the right time in the right way." So, according to this statement, even uneducated people can be intelligent, can't they? So many people in so many places are under-estimated because people are so blind that they cant see how brilliant they really are. Each person, unless he's mentally retarded, is blessed with a special talent, a special ability with which he can add beauty to this world!! If a person is a good artist and not-so-good at science, why do we only have to point out his cons? Why can't we encourage his talents?? Why do we have to suppress him SO much that he starts feeling inferior??

If people only do what THEY want to do, rather than going with the mob, this world would be such a better place. It should be YOU who decides you are intelligent or not, and not some random person. For once, we all should try to live our lives by our rules. And, one more thing, next time you question a person's so-called "intelligence" or "ability", just think bout the thing you're worse at..!!

Till next time,

Ta-Daaan!!

Lessons Learnt:
1. Every person is intelligent in his own way.
2. We are the one who define our lives, not others.
3. Not one is perfect.

a 13 yr old kid working on streets to help his family to survive might be much more intelligent than a dude selected in IIT if he is given same kind of education/facillities ..
so judging someone's intelligence with his success is not intelligent way to check intelligence .. but kuch logon ko style maarne kii aadat hoti hai .wat can you do na ?

i think its similar to how people relate being fat to being healthy...intelligence is merely a weak function of education...intelligence is the ability to create new information (though its debatable whether any information the brain creates or processes is original or merely a combination of existing info)...u cannot rule out the fact that education does help in developing this ability to process or create new information, cause it serves like a gym where u can work out ur mental abilities. But yes...the notion which exists in indian society is...if u r a math student, u r intelligent. This is wrong..and comes from the insecurity indians have within themselves deep beneath (don't know if this could be related to being suppressed and denied rights for 190 yrs). It is something which the gen next shouldn't be bothered abt, like i, for example am not bothered abt being slim ;)

It also arises from the fact that intelligence is seen as a uni-dimentional aspect of the brain by the general public. What that implies is, it is sufficient to judge for ur IQ through ur school performances. A counter argument stands, that its not that d society is ignorant abt intelligence being a multidimentional thingy…but the scene in India forces the society to make sure that we, the students, concentrate only on that part of intelligence which would enable us to earn our daily meal, and thus the other talents or abilities are curbed by parents or other elder members of the society, fearing that they may never have a scope for blossoming into a cash-returning investment.
cheers..

Oh yea, you've got it bang on. you know what...education is more about "awareness" . and somehow i believe intelligence can be enhanced. one should be aware of the "area" where she/he is good. being intelligent doesn't necessarily mean being good in math or chess :)

i liked your rambling gurl!

You have done very well to point the features of intelligence. Well from my perspective, intelligence is something which comes from your uncorrupted part of mind. Intelligence is just a response to this world, the better you respond to this world, the better are you. I also try to tell ma folks about this, but. not many indians understand such things. gud job.

Dictionary meaning of education says :" the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life."
So basically to be educated means to be well aware of things rather than being ignorant.
Intelligence refers to how well you comprehend things and then apply them in various disciplines of life[not just the subject].
So one can use intelligence if he has any only if he has a decent knowledge i,e; he is educated. As far as I see it, the two go hand in hand.

ps: why don't you reply to the comments you get...the blog then becomes interactive and more interesting.

Haha. Remember my days of IIT-aspirations that never materialized. No regrets now though. Beautifully put.

i really appreciate ur flair at writing and offcourse ur thinking and vision at such a young age....this is so true .... i mean intelligence is always judged from the academic frame of reference ....they dont realise d different ways in which ppl can b intelligent....tendulkar has cricketing intelligence while ronaldo has it in football.... both r intelligent in their own special way...nice to see some souls enlightened even before watching taare zameen par :-)
